Southeast Asian cooking has become the focus of my research and enjoyment, so that I'm continuously at work developing recipes from the area, and teaching. I'm continuing my research also into the food and food history of the area. My ambition is to be able to pass on my knowledge to the younger generation of chefs, food industry professionals and students.

Lifetime Achievement Award from the Guild of Food Writers in 2017; The Rice Book won the Andre Simon Memorial Award 1993; nominated for a James Beard Award (New York); Indonesian Regional Food and Cookery was nominated for the Julia Child Award; won the Langhe Ceretto Award for cookery book; NewWave Asian won 2002 Gourmand Award for The World Best Asian Cuisine Book
