WRAP have released ground-breaking research which could save 100,000 tonnes of food waste and 21,500 tonnes of single-use plastics. The guidelines detail the actions needed to guide consumer behaviour towards changes that will benefit the environment. The guidelines feature three key recommendations: only selling products loose so that customers can buy the amount they need, removing ‘best before’ date labels and ensuring that consumer fridges are sub 5ºC. Amazon have crossed the £1 billion threshold in grocery sales which means they now fall under the Groceries Supply Code of Practice (GSCOP). This change means Amazon could face a fine of up £236 million (1% of annual sales) if found to be breaching the code. The code is designed to safeguard suppliers from unfair practices, which means the algorithmic nature of Amazon listings will come under scrutiny and could prevent some of their delisting practices. Ultra-processed foods appear to be having an increased impact on the environment compared to their unprocessed or minimally processed counterparts. A team of international researchers studied the impact of over 300 foods for thirty years and found that the environmental impact of ultra-processed food per 1000kcal had doubled during that time. Meanwhile, the impact of unprocessed foods had stayed the same, and minimally processed foods had reduced in impact. Read more…
